Pregunta:¿Nos podrías decir cómo empezaste tu carrera en la música?

Question: Could you tell us how did you start your career in music?

Respuesta: Empecé tocando cuando era un niño, mi carrera empezó realmente en los setenta, estaba en una banda de hard rock n roll muy influenciada por Slade, se llamaba Machine Gun…luego en una banda llamada U-Boat, después en Frankie and The Flames…¡He tocado también el piano en pubs desde que tenía 16 años aproximadamente…!

Answer: I started playing as a kid, my career really started in the seventies, I was in a heavy rock n roll Slade influenced band, called Machine Gun… then a band called U-Boat, then Frankie and The Flames… I have played piano in pubs as well, ever since I was about 16 years old…..!

Después de muchos años pisando los escenarios, ¿qué te empuja a seguir adelante?

After so many years treading stage floors, what keeps you moving forward?

Amo la escena y su gente. Amo la música y ¡quiero más todo el tiempo! Quiero seguir tocando en directo y grabando nuevas canciones, ¡además de seguir tocando los viejos clásicos! El estilo de vida y la música va en mi sangre.

I love the scene, and our people; I love the music and I want more all the time! I want to keep playing live shows and recording new songs as well as playing the old favourites! The lifestyle and music is in my blood.

En tu opinión, ¿cuáles son los mayores cambios que ha habido en la escena inglesa desde los ochenta?

In your opinion, what are the biggest changes in the English scene since the 80's?

Hay muchas más bandas ahora, y los politizados en la escena se han sobrecalentado. Ha habido divisiones y diferentes bandos, necesitamos más unidad en el movimiento, como la solía haber antes…pero últimamente cada persona o banda toman sus propias opciones sobre lo que piensan y cómo vivir sus vidas. Estas son las principales diferencias; de nuevo más bandas en la escena, festivales más grandes y grupos de mayor entidad, Oi! Is back with a bang!

There’s a lot more bands now, and the politics in the scene has got overheated. There have been splits and different factions, we need more unity in the scene like it used to be…but ultimately each person or band make their own choices about what they think and how they live their lives. Those are the main differences- more bands on the scene again, bigger festivals and more high profile bands, Oi! is back with a bang!

¿Qué aspectos o valores consideras relevantes para el estilo de vida skin?

Which values or aspects do you consider relevant to the skin lifestyle?

Mantenerte en la mejor forma posible, ser elegante, lealtad a la familia y a la escena, apoyar a las bandas, a tu equipo de fútbol, a los clubs y a la escena, permanecer juntos y ayudarnos siempre que sea posible; no tomar ninguna mierda de nadie…

Stay as fit as you can, smart, family and scene loyalty, support the bands, your football team; clubs and the scene, stick together, and help each other if possible; don’t take any shit from anyone….

¿Tienes alguna opinión sobre España que quisieras compartir con nosotros? ¿Ejpañoles? ¿Comida española? ¿Cerveza española?

Got any opinions about Spain that you'd like to share with us? Spaniards? Spanish food? Spanish beer?

He estado en España muchas veces y tengo muchos amigos ahí y en las Islas Baleares. ¡Demasiados para contarlos! Hablo un poco de español porque tuve que aprenderlo en el colegio y procuro hablarlo cuando estoy en España, lo que me ha ayudado a comunicarme mejor con mis amigos españoles. Me gustan todos los tipos de tapas, la paella, la tortilla y el chorizo. De las cervezas españolas me gustan, entre otras, Mahou, San Miguel y Estrella. ¡Salud!

I’ve been to Spain many times and have a lot of friends in Espana and the Balearic Islands- too many to count! I speak a bit of Spanish because I had to learn Spanish at school and I try to speak it when in Spain, which has helped me to communicate more easily with my Spanish friends. I like all kinds of tapas, paella, tortilla, and chorizo sausages; the Spanish beer I like includes Mahou, San Miguel and Estrella. ¡Cheers!

Can you tell us something about touring with Superyob?

Superyob ha estado de gira en el Reino Unido, Alemania, Francia, Holanda, Bélgica, república Checa, Noruega, Suecia, España y Estados Unidos. Nuestra discográfica ha organizado muchas giras para nosotros. Además hemos dado muchos conciertos con bandas que son colegas nuestros; damos conciertos cada año. Disfrutamos siempre de ir de gira y tocar en conciertos, nos encanta estar sobre el escenario tocando nuestra música, viendo a toda la gente de los conciertos pasando un buen rato y luego poder conocer a algunos de ellos después haber tocado. Cada concierto de Superyob es un evento especial para nosotros, y siempre intentamos hacer de cada uno un evento especial para los asistentes. Cada persona que viene a vernos tocar es especial para nosotros porque ellos han demostrado querer estar en ese lugar para vernos. Siempre apreciamos su apoyo y el hecho de que hayan gastado su dinero para ver tocar en directo a Superyob. Tocamos en Superyob para nuestros fans: skins, punks, scooter boys, fans del fútbol y todo aquel que quiera ser parte de nuestro espectáculo. Nunca nos olvidamos de ellos, son parte de nosotros y de la experiencia Superyob. Ellos son tíos de la clase trabajadora como nosotros, tocamos y cantamos para ellos, ¡nunca nos olvidamos de la calle y de dónde venimos! Hay millones como nosotros: el ejército mundial del Oi!.

Superyob have toured in the Uk, Germany, France, Holland, Belgium, Czech republic, Norway, Sweden, Spain and the USA. Our record label has organised many tours for us….and we have also done lots of shows with bands who are mates of us; and we play gigs every year. We always enjoy touring and playing shows, it`s so good to be onstage and play our music, and to see all the people at the concerts having a great time and meet some of them after we have played… Every Superyob gig is a special event for us, and we always try to make it a special event for the audience. Every person who comes to see us play is special to us because they have proved they want to be at the venue to see us. We always appreciate their support and the fact that they have spent their money to watch Superyob play live. We play in Superyob for our fans: skins, punx, scooter boys, football fans and anybody else who wants to be part of our show. We never forget them, they are part of us and the Superyob experience. They are working class blokes like us, we play and sing for them, we never forget the streets and where we come from! There are millions like us: the worldwide Oi! army.

Aparte de Superyob, ¿en cuántas bandas has estado? ¿Algún recuerdo cariñoso?

Apart from Superyob, how many bands have you been in? Any fond memories?

He estado en algunas bandas y he grabado y producido discos con muchos grupos de nuestra escena.

Yo estaba en “Machine Gun”(banda de Heavy Rock n Roll, influenciada por Slade); “First Class” (Pop/Rock, tenían un éxito en las listas británicas y me fui de gira con ellos como músico); “Joe Brown and the Bruvvers” (fui de gira con Joe como músico en su banda, la música eran casi todo canciones de Joe, tipo rock/folk). Me uní a “Woodymansey`s U-Boat” (Heavy rock). Woody fue el batería de David Bowie en sus éxitos y álbumes iniciales. Le conocí por un anuncio que buscaba teclista y formamos “U-Boat”. Encontramos representación y un buen contrato discográfico con EMI Bronze Records. También hicimos gira con la banda de heavy metal “Uriah Heep”, haciendo grandes conciertos en Reino Unido, Europa y Escandinavia (ayuntamientos, estadios y festivales al aire libre). Tocamos en el Reading Festival en Reino Unido y rompimos todos los récords de taquilla en el famoso Marquee Club de Londres mientras tuvimos la residencia en ese club, tocando una vez por semana durante cuatro semanas. Grabamos un single y un álbum, además de dar muchos más conciertos. Hicimos un vídeo del grupo (antes de que se usaran los vídeos), eran tiempos grandes, mierda…Si Bowie era “glamrock”, ¡U-Boat era “rock con un poco de glam”! Ja,ja…El manager nos estafó completamente, el productor de nuestro álbum intentó convertirnos en una banda pop; la banda se dividió y acabé muy enfadado con “El gran momento de tendencia de la industria musical”…¡Muchas estafas, drogas, mierda y gente falsa! Amo la música pero no creo en el negocio de la música de tendencia…Mi experiencia en U-Boat me hizo pensar “que le jodan a esto, quiero ser yo mismo, escribir mis propias canciones sobre mi propia realidad y estilo de vida de un obrero de ciudad”. Así que decidí volver a mis raíces (tocando en pubs y clubs) y formé “Frankie and The Flames”, que éramos mis colegas y yo. Nuestra música era una mezcla de punk/power pop y pub rock, y se volvió muy popular. Muchos skins y otras banadas como The Business, Squeeze, Joey Teen, The Gonads y Eddie and The Hot Rods, solían venir a ver nuestros conciertos en Londres. Hicimos gira por Reino Unido y Europa. Por aquel tiempo yo también hacía sesiones y trabajo de producción para otras bandas. Grabé con The Gonads, Prole, Orgasm Gorillas, The Blood, The Business, Eddie and The Hot Rods, Dumpy´s Rusty Nuts, y muchos otros más.

I’ve been in a few bands and I’ve recorded and done record production with a lot of bands in our scene.

I was in “Machine Gun” (Heavy Rock n Roll style band, influenced by Slade); “First Class” (Pop/Rock, they had a chart hit in the UK and I toured with them as a session player); “Joe Brown and the Bruvvers” (I toured with Joe as a session player in his band, the music was mostly Joe’s songs, sort of rock/folk). I joined “Woody Woodmansey’s U-Boat” (Heavy Rock). Woody was David Bowie’s drummer on all Bowie’s early hits and albums. I met him through an advertisement for a keyboard player and we formed “U-boat”. We got management and a huge record label deal with EMI Bronze records. We also toured with heavy metal band “Uriah Heep”, did all the biggest gigs in UK, Europe and Scandinavia (city halls, sports stadiums and open air festivals). We played at the Reading festival in the UK and broke all box office records at the famous Marquee club in London while we had a residency there at the club, playing once a week for four weeks. We made a single and an album and did loads of other shows. We made a film of the band (before video was used), it was ‘big time’ shit… If Bowie was ‘glamrock’ then U-Boat was ‘rock with a bit of glam!’ haha…The manager ripped us all off completely, the record producer on our album tried to turn us into a pop band; the band split and I got very pissed off with ‘The big time mainstream record industry’…. Too much rip offs, drugs, bullshit and false people! I love music but I don’t trust the ‘mainstream music business’… My experiences in U-boat made me think ‘Fuck this, I want to be myself and write my own songs about my own reality and lifestyle as an urban working class bloke’. So, I decided to go back to my roots (playing in pubs and clubs) and I formed “Frankie And The Flames” which was me and my local mates. Our music was a mix of punk/ power pop and pub rock and it became very popular. A lot of skins and other bands like The Business, Squeeze, Joey Teen, The Gonads and Eddie and The Hot Rods used to come and see our shows in London. We toured in the UK and Europe. At this time I also did a lot of session and production work for other bands. I recorded with The Gonads, Prole, Orgasm Gorillas, The Blood, The Business, Eddie and The Hot Rods, Dumpy’s Rusty Nuts, and loads of others.

Has estado metido en el cine, ¿puedes hablarnos sobre ello?

You've also been on film, can you speak about that?

Sí, he aparecido en algunas películas como actor extra y he tenido algún cameo. Entre ellas,

*”This year´s love”, (Comedia romantic en Londres) con la actuación de Kathy Burke, Jamie Forman y David Gray. Estuve tres días, me cogieron para tres o cuatro escenas para hacer de skin en un pub y bebiendo en un concierto. Esta película se convirtió en una comedia de éxito y me introdujo en el mundo de los extras del cine.

*”Jimmy Fizz” (peli de estrellas del pop y mafiosos), con la actuación de Amanda Donohue. Estábamos rodando fuera de un pub, llovía en el set, y ella tenía una escena en la que la disparaban y tenía que caer al suelo. Se negó a caer “porque se iba a mojar”. El director le dijo que no podía usar un doble porque era un disparo a quemarropa, pero ella siguió negándose a hacer la escena como estaba escrita. Todos los demás se estaban mojando, los cámaras, el equipo técnico y el resto de actores, pero ella se negó “a mojarse”. Tuvieron que cortar escenas y reescribir la última parte de la película por culpa de esto. Fue un comportamiento poco profesional teniendo en cuenta el dinero que le iban a pagar, y se comportó como una malcriada. ¡Amanda, cojones, madura un poquito!

*”Me Without You” (una comedia en el Brighton de los ochenta) con la actuación de Trudi Styler (la mujer de Sting) y Anna Friel (la que solía salir en la telenovela “Brookside”…¿os acordaís?). Me cogieron para hacer de punk en un club y salí bastantes escenas.

*”Crust”. Esta película iba sobre una gamba de tres metros y medio que quería ser boxeadora…(sí, habéis leído bien). Para la peli se usó una gamba gigante que era movida por control remoto. No sé lo que el escritor estaba fumando cuando escribió ese guión.

*”Possession”. Aquí actuaba Gwynneth Paltrow, (drama historic, una película Americana de muchísimo presupuesto), y estuve tres días en el set en Greenwich, cerca de donde vivo, en el Museo Marítimo, el cual había sido alquilado por la compañía de cine. Tenía que llevar atuendo del siglo XIX y peluca.  El resultado con aquella ropa y la peluca me hizo parecer un predicador del infierno o uno de esos padres fundadores de EE. UU. Todavía me río cuando veo las fotos que me hicieron en el rodaje. En una escena tenía que caminar detrás de Gwynneth Paltrow mientras ella paseaba por ahí. Es una preciosidad…¡y me sonrió! (Ese Chris Martin de Coldplay es un completo capullo con suerte habiéndose casado con ella…¿Cómo pudo ella casarse con un vejestorio que hace música tan aburrida? ¡Coldplay es como la banda sonora de un coma! Ven aquí Gwynneth y descubre las alegrías del Oi! ¡Tengo Guinness frías en el frigorífico!

*”Enduring Love”(otra comedia-drama británica). Aquí actuaba uno de los actores escoceses de “Trainspotting” y también Daniel Craig, el que se convertiría en el nuevo James Bond. Hablé con el jefe del casting para meter al bajista de Speryob, John, al rodaje conmigo como extras, y estuvimos un día de rodaje juntos con más extras. John y yo teníamos que hacer de locos en un asilo de lunáticos, y yo tenía que llevar un camisón, pantuflas, un gorro de lana y parecer atontado, y jugar con bolas de snooker en una mesa de snooker como si me hubiesen lobotomizado…(a veces esto me suena familiar después de océanos de Guiness…).

*”Rise of the Footsoldier”. Es la verdadera historia de Carlton Leach, un icono de la West Ham ICF Firm y una leyenda de su propio tiempo. Es una película británica, brillantemente dirigida por Julian Gilbey, quien estuvo nominado a un premio Bafta. Cuenta la historia de Carlton, que pasó de ser un hooligan a portero de seguridad para después ser un gángster. Se hizo con un presupuesto de millón y medio de libras (lo que es una meada en el océano en el mundo del cine). Documenta el ascenso de Carlton con la West Ham ICF Firm, sus movidas con The Treatment Firm del Millwall, los ultras del Manchester United y otros…y luego su cambio a guardia de seguridad y portero, sus enfrentamientos con un mafioso turco de la heroína…Disturbios en el fútbol, palizas, torturas, éxasis, delirios, armas, cocaína, asesinatos y anabolizantes hacen un thriller de esta película. Me cogieron para hacer del jefe de un grupo de un grupo de hinchas que se pelean en las calles, teníamos que cargar contra otro grupo y pelearnos. Sin embargo, ruedas durante tres o cuatro días y te ves tan solo diez segundos en la pantalla con la película terminada, pero es todo lo que puede esperar un extra. “Rise of the Footsoldier” es una brillante y realista película londinense basada en fútbol y una historia criminal, se la recomiendo a todo el mundo.

Yep, I’ve appeared in some films- as an ‘extra’ actor and I’ve had ‘cameo’ roles. These includes,

*‘This year’s love’,

(Romantic comedy set in London) starring Kathy Burke, Jamie Forman and David Gray. I did three days on this one, I was cast in three or four scenes as a skin in the pub and at a gig drinking. This film turned out to be a comedy success, and introduced me to the world of the film extra.

* ‘Jimmy Fizz’ (Pop stars and gangsters flick), starring Amanda Donohue. We were filming outside a pub, it was raining on the set, and she had a scene where she had to get shot and fall over. She refused to fall over ‘because she’d get wet’. The director said they couldn´t use a body double because it was a close up shot, but she still refused to do the scene the way it was written. Everyone else was getting wet, the cameramen and technical people and the other actors, but she refused to’get wet’. They had to cut scenes and re-write the last part of the film because of this. It was very un-professional behaviour considering the money she was being paid, and she behaved like a spoilt brat. Bollox Amanda, grow up!

* ‘Me Without You’ ( A comedy set in the 80’s in Brighton) starring Sting’s wife Trudi Styler and Anna Friel (who used to be in ‘Brookside’ tv soap...remember that?). I was cast as a punk in a club and had to do several scenes.

* ‘Crust’ . This film was about a twelve foot high prawn who wanted to be a boxer....(yes, you read that correctly). A huge prawn operated by remote radio control ‘animatronics’ was used in the film. I don’t know what the writer was smoking when he wrote this film script.

* ‘Possession ’. This starred Gwynneth Paltrow, (big budget American money flick, historical drama) and I did three days on a film set in Greenwich, (near where I live) at the Maritime Museum, which the film company had hired out. I had to wear 19th century clothes and wear a wig. The result with the costume and the wig made me look like a hell preacher or one of the USA founding fathers. I still laugh looking at the pictures that were taken of me on the set. In one scene I had to walk behind Gwynneth Paltrow as she strolled through the place. She is a real beauty.....and she smiled at me!.......gulp…. (That Chris Martin in Coldplay is a right lucky bastard being married to her.... How could she marry a geezer who makes such boring music? Coldplay’s like the soundtrack to a coma! Come here Gwynneth and discover the joys of Oi! I’ve got Guinness in the fridge too!).

* ‘Enduring Love’ (Another British comedy/drama). This featured one of the Scottish actors from ‘Trainspotting’ and also Daniel Craig, who has since become the new James Bond. I fixed it with the casting agent to get Superyob’s bass player John in on the action as an extra with me in this film, and we did a day’s filming together with other extras. Me and John were cast as nutters in a lunatic asylum, and I had to wear a dressing gown and slippers and a wool hat and look dopey, and play with snooker balls on a snooker table as if I’d had a lobotomy... (sometimes this feels familiar, after oceans of Guinness....)

 *’Rise of the Footsoldier ’. This is the true story of Carlton Leach, a top man on the West Ham ICF Firm and a legend in his own lifetime. It´s a British film, brilliantly directed by Julian Gilbey, who has a Bafta nomination. It tells the story of Carlton’s rise from football hooligan to doorman/ security guard to gangster. It was made on a budget on about a million and a half pounds, (which is a piss in the ocean in the film world). It documents Carlton’s rise with West Ham’s ICF firm, run-ins with ‘The Treatment’ firm from Millwall, the Man.U. firm and others.....and then his move to security work and bouncer, clashes with a Turkish heroin gang…Football riots, beatings, torture, ecstasy and raves, guns, cocaine, murders and annabolic steroids all make this film a thriller. I was cast as the leader of a football crew that fights in the streets, we had to charge another crew and have a tear up. However,- you do three or four days filming and see yerself on screen in the finished film for about ten seconds,but that’s all you can expect as an extra! ‘Rise Of The Footsoldier’ is a brilliant realistic London based football/crime story, and I recommend it to anyone.

Claro, me gusta el fútbol (West Ham e Inglaterra), viajar, pintar y dibujar. También uso las cartas de Runas y la numerología.

Yeah, I like football (West Ham and England), travel, and painting and drawing. I also use Rune cards and numerology…..

Si os referís a tocar en el mismo show, ¡entonces montones! Demasiados para citarlos…Si os referís a bandas a las que unirme, estoy comprometido con ser el vocalista y letrista en Superyob, además de actuar como solista,¡y eso es suficiente para mí!

If you mean play at the same show- then yeah, loads! Too many to mention,… if you mean ‘join’ a band- I’m committed to being vocalist and songwriter in Superyob, and doing solo Franky Flame shows and that’s enough for me!

Dos buenas bandas de Oi! del Reino Unido que están empezando y que conozco son ‘Queensbury Rules’ de Bristol y ‘No Quarter’ de Birmingham… También están Close Shave, Skinfull, Condemned 84, Hooligan UK, Last Orders, Citizen Keyne, Steel Comb, Streetpunk Drunks, Flathead (todas son de Reino Unido y les conozco).

En Alemania; 7erJungs, Martens Army, Krawallbruder, Pobel und Gesocks (todos ellos amigos míos también)

After all of these years you've sure got many stories to tell, got anything special for us?

¿Especial? Jajaja, mis labios están sellados. Solo deciros que espero escribir un libro sobre esto algún día. Hay mucho que decir aquí, muchísimas historias, y la mayoría incluyen a mucha otra gente, así que es mejor que lo diga en mi libro.

 ‘Special’??? hahaha- my lips are sealed… let`s just say that I hope to write a book about it all one day, there is too much to say here, there’s a huge amount of stories and these mostly include a lot of other people, so it`s best I say it in my book…. Lol….
